Looking back to when I spent two amazing weeks in Guanajuato, Mexico, studying Spanish at the wonderful Escuela Mexicana. The school is full of character and has great teachers, lots of classrooms, and even study areas on the rooftop with beautiful views of the city.
After a morning of studying, I went into town to explore more of Guanajuato’s colorful alleys and lively streets. Later, I returned to school for a special lecture on traditional Mexican music.
We learned all about the roots and evolution of this rich musical tradition — especially mariachi, a lively and emotional style. Originating in western Mexico, mariachi is known for its vibrant sound and powerful emotion, featuring violins, trumpets, guitars, vihuela, guitarrón and expressive vocals. Dressed in traditional charro outfits, mariachi bands often perform at celebrations and public squares.
We listened to a lot of different Mexican music and we even got to sing along. We had so much fun experiencing the culture firsthand! — an unforgettable, joyful evening!
